Strong winter gusts brought walls down upon fragile shelters housing people displaced by conflict in Gaza, claiming the lives of at least four people. These deaths highlights the dangerous situation that persist after over 24 months of devastating bombardment and critical lack of aid.

Truce Offers Little Relief from Severe Weather

Although a ceasefire has been in effect since October, aid groups state that residents broadly lack the adequate shelter necessary to withstand recurring winter storms.

Officials at Gaza City's largest medical facility, which took in the bodies, said on this week that the dead were a pair of adult females, a girl, and a man.

In a separate incident, the Gaza health ministry announced on the same day that a one-year-old boy succumbed of extreme cold overnight.

"International actors has allowed us to experience death in every possible way," stated Bassel Hamouda following the funeral. "It’s true the bombing may have temporarily stopped, but we have seen all imaginable reasons of death in the world in the Gaza Strip."

Relatives Crushed in Shelter Collapse

As per Shifa hospital, 3 members of a one family — elderly a man, his teenage granddaughter, and his son's wife — were fatally injured when an 26-foot tall wall collapsed on top of their dwelling in a coastal area of the city. At least five others were hurt in the event.

Their relatives on Tuesday started removing the debris that had buried their family and rebuilding the temporary homes for survivors.

Aid Efforts and Ongoing Crisis

United Nations agencies and its humanitarian partners were handing out tents, tarps, warm covers and clothing as well as nutrition and sanitation items across Gaza, said the UN office for the coordination of humanitarian affairs.

Most of Palestinians reside in improvised shelters since their homes were turned into rubble over the course of the hostilities. Aid groups contend not enough shelter materials are entering Gaza during the ceasefire.

Fatality Numbers After the Truce

Local health authorities, part of the administration, says over 440 individuals have been fatally shot by gunfire and their remains taken to hospitals after the truce began. The ministry maintains comprehensive casualty data that are considered largely accurate by international bodies and independent experts.

A spokesperson for UNICEF, representing the UN children's fund, said on Tuesday that at least 100 minors under the age of 18 – 60 boys and 40 females – had been killed after the truce started due to armed actions, such as drone strikes, air raids, artillery fire and use of bullets. These numbers, he said, reflected incidents where sufficient information had been gathered to justify recording, but the total toll is believed to be greater. He added that hundreds of minors had been injured.

"While 'explosions and shootings have slowed' under the truce, they have not ceased," Elder informed reporters at a UN briefing in Geneva by video from Gaza City. "So what the international community now terms quiet would be considered a catastrophe anywhere else," he concluded.

Third Winter of Struggle

Gaza’s residents of more than 2 million people has been struggling to fend off the cold weather and bad weather away while enduring lack of assistance and a absence of sturdier transitional shelter, which is urgently required during the winter months. This marks the 3rd winter after the conflict involving the state and Hamas started on 7 October 2023, when fighters attacked Israeli territory and killed approximately 1,200 individuals and took hostage two hundred and fifty-one others into Gaza.

The local health authority says more than 71,400 Palestinians have been fatally injured in the subsequent military campaign.
