What's Inside that Briefcase Henry Unlocks in Stranger Things?

For much of the fifth and final season of *Stranger Things*, the young Holly Wheeler and Max find themselves trapped in a realm of memories built from the recollections of the villain Henry. The search for an escape route in "Escape from Camazotz" leads them to relive a life-altering moment from Henry's childhood—an event that could contain the means to overcome him for good.

Spoiler Warning: This discussion details significant events for *Stranger Things* season 5, volume 2.

A Journey Into the Tunnel

Upon meeting Max in the mental landscape known as Camazotz, it becomes clear she is taking refuge in a chamber that Henry is terrified of. An accidental discovery a spyglass taken from Henry's old home allows Holly to realize that the true terror lies outside of the cave. By aligning her view through the cap, she and Max plummet into a subterranean passage.

They watch a Henry as a boy encounter an wounded, fearful individual. As the boy offers aid, the man panics and shoots, wounding the boy in the hand. Fighting for his life, Henry ends the threat with a rock. "Is this what corrupted him?" Holly asks tearfully. Essentially, yes, but the act went deeper than a simple act of survival.

Similar to other plot points this season, the significance of the encounter originates in the stage play the prequel play.

An Interdimensional Incident and Stolen Research

This backstory explains the legendary naval test, which allegedly sent a warship into a plane later called the Abyss. Demogorgons assaulted it, and the lone returnee was the captain, who returned in a unresponsive state with an entirely new blood.

The captain's son, Martin Brenner, attempted to recreate this phenomenon in remote Nevada. However, a treacherous employee stole research materials to hand over to the Communist spies, who were desperate to launch their own interdimensional projects. That traitor in the mine shaft is the one who stole the materials.

The Briefcase's Contents

Considering what is revealed about his research, the briefcase would assuredly have some of Captain Brenner's infected blood. As shown, Henry is bleeding from his hand. It's probable he was infected upon opening the case, leading to the development of his psychic abilities—abilities he would inadvertently transfer to the children Brenner would experiment on.

Alternatively, the case could have held exotic matter that later made its way to Hawkins Laboratory, where it helps stabilize the Upside Down. The prequel shows that Henry somehow wound up in the Abyss, reappearing 12 hours later with a new blood type and personality. From then on, he struggles with the influence of a dark entity, much like how Will was controlled by the Mind Flayer in season 2.

Confronting Terror

The reason Henry avoids the cave associated with the mine demonstrates how deeply scarring the incident was for him. While he commands the Hive Mind and works to collapse the Abyss into Hawkins, a part of him remains. Vecna uses fear, and the show is setting up a showdown between Vecna and Will, who has deliberately faced his greatest terrors to gain strength.

This journey has taken a weapon from Vecna. Furthermore, Will now knows what Vecna himself fears, and this may grant a key upper hand in the ultimate battle ahead.
