Tuchel Desires Jude Bellingham's Aggression Provided The Three Lions' Ace Sets Aside His Ego Outside.
One snub proved sufficient. A second one and it would have started to look spiteful from Thomas Tuchel, a coach who is far too wily not to understand that claiming the World Cup trophy will likely need help from the talented midfielder, even if it is equally Bellingham's responsibility to blend into the strategic frameworks and team pecking order necessary with England now that he is returned to Tuchel's supportive environment.
Tuchel desires the player's competitive fire, his passion, but it is about using it constructively. Individual quality is important but the squad have learned the hard way that there is consequences when stardom takes over. Nevertheless, a point has been made.
The midfielder was given food for thought after not being selected of the previous squad. He watched the national side qualify at the tournament in his absence. He watched Morgan Rogers perform brilliantly as a high-pressing No 10. He heard Tuchel talk about valuing the group’s energy and principles. Inevitably, Bellingham has reacted in champion style, scoring crucial goals for his club versus Barcelona and the Italian side. His selection was inevitable; a second snub would have left his World Cup hopes hanging by a thread.
The hope is that the manager will have a Bellingham directed towards pressuring the opposition instead of his own colleagues. Ultimately, from a tactical perspective, there is little benefit to creating tension with one of the best players in the world. The ideal scenario is that Bellingham’s time out of the team has made him realize that representing the national team is a precious, precarious thing. Tuchel, on his side, can now offer support for the 22-year-old after proving that he is willing to take tough decisions.
“There is no problem with him, there is no problem about his personality,” Tuchel commented. “Bellingham just has that aggression. It takes that kind of fire to succeed at the top that he has. Everyone need to support him and create an environment which he can use that intensity against rivals and in pursuit of success we are striving for as a team.”
Bellingham dominated much of the focus at Tuchel’s squad announcement for the upcoming meaningless matches versus Serbia and the other. Any other news? Well, how about another talent? Here is a further gifted No 10 in need of love and guidance. Foden has not played for the national team since spring and has struggled to perform well this year but Tuchel had to consider the 25-year-old after his display in his club's victory against Borussia Dortmund this week.
The question, however, is the best way to deploy the various creators at the team's disposal. Rogers and Eberechi Eze deserve their spots and there will be a strong case to pick Cole Palmer once he is fit after a fitness issue. Would taking five No 10s to the World Cup be excessive? Gareth Southgate never found the optimal mix at Euro 2024. He made concessions by squeezing Foden and Bellingham into the starting lineup, cramping the captain's style in the process.
It seems unlikely the current manager making the same mistake if it harms the offensive structure. There is room for one No 10, with quick attackers on the wings. Clear roles helps. Bellingham is selected as a No 10. Bournemouth’s Alex Scott, selected for the first occasion, is a central midfielder and the returning Adam Wharton will vie with another player as a No 6. Additionally, there is no position on the wing for Foden, who has to be central. Tuchel wants him near Kane. “It does not make sense to ask Foden: ‘We want you on the pitch but there’s no space in your preferred role, can you play left wing? Can you play right wing?” he stated. “He will play in the No 9-10ish position, through the center. I've long had this vision regarding him for years. I think it fits his style the most.”
He conceded there are times when Foden has seemed out of sorts in an national jersey. “One senses almost like, ‘Is he truly happy? And a player like him who has this childish joy to play football, then obviously an issue exists, be it his role, the setup, I don’t know.
“In my opinion he is additionally accustomed to representing his club in a specific system, to have a defined role. Believe he benefits greatly from clear instructions. Where do you want me to be? In which positions am I to receive the ball? When should I to push the tempo? Where do I have to defend?
The manager mentioned one star bursting through for tap-ins and Foden scoring goals from outside the box. He added he has a longlist of 60 players. Several players, Myles Lewis-Skelly, James Trafford and the midfielder have been omitted. Nico O’Reilly is recognized for his excellent performances for City at defense. Interest is high.
The omission of the striker means there is no direct replacement for Kane in this squad. Fascinatingly, he suggested deploying the playmaker as a deep-lying striker versus one opponent or the other. Other options, Marcus Rashford, Bellingham and the winger are other options should he be absent. With qualification secured, this is a moment for a little experimentation.
At the same time, it is also a chance to get the understanding with his teammate flowing. It's surprising that you have to go back to Bellingham assisting the captain to score in a friendly win versus Scotland in September 2023 to discover the one and only time in 35 games for the national team when the pair combined for a goal. The coach will be aware that Kane and Bellingham only passed to each other a single time during England’s draws with one opponent and Slovenia at the Euros. Their partnership is lacking.
“This is where at some point it becomes the duty of the individuals,” he stated. He is not afraid to be blunt. Remains a feeling of the player having to prove himself. He cannot even be guaranteed to start versus Serbia and Albania. The manager wants him onside but he will be watching him carefully. Leave self-importance at the door. Doing so could turn a powerful squad into an even better one.
