The New Animated Series' Opening Sequence Selected the Wrong Popular RPG Show Track
This latest animated series, the most recent animated adventure from Critical Role, unveiled a new opening credits. It showcases our favorite cast of misfits, outcasts, and rogues kicking ass and taking names, while also hinting at several heart-wrenching backstories for key figures such as the voice actor's mage Caleb, and another actor's warlock orc, Fjord.
Overall, the opening looks amazing. However, I felt that something was lost in the song choice.
This sequence uses "Welcome to the Continent", an exceptional composition created by producer and singer Colm McGuinness. It's a track from the official score of that title, the second release put out by Critical Role Productions LLC's music division their music brand. It's a wonderful nostalgic option, and I believe that devotees of the second campaign will appreciate its presence.
Personally, The series' opening doesn't quite capture the hype and excitement that accompanied the show's live-play sessions. "It's Your Turn", composed by singer-songwriter Jason Charles Miller, became an immediate hit in my view when it was first revealed in 2015, and it improved further when cast member the performer wrote words to the melody for the series' animated intro in the later year.
Including singing from Ashley Johnson, another performer, Travis Willingham, as well as the writer, the track was catchy and fun. Back then, I hadn't seen the follow-up series at that point, but it was so infectious that I still saved it on my device. It's a song that knows how to get you pumped before you start an episode of adventurous fun.
The show's intro with "Welcome to Wildemount" doesn't strike the right notes in my opinion. It's a grand piece of music, but based on my understanding of this party, I feel that its tone is somewhat mismatched.
Naturally, the creators has stated that the series will have some changes and differences from the original live sessions. An adjusted mood for its opening seems to be among these.
The Mighty Nein will be available to watch on Prime Video from Nov. 19. For those eager before that, or wish to prepare to learn about the personas of the second series, the original episodes are accessible on the audio platform and YouTube.
