The Mayor-Elect confirms he will live in the iconic Gracie Mansion
NYC's Mayor-Elect, Zohran Mamdani, has confirmed to take up residence in the iconic Gracie Mansion, leaving behind his rent-controlled apartment that was a central issue in his campaign.
An Iconic Home
Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the official residence for the majority of New York City mayors after the mid-20th century.
Yet, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a key policy, was not quick to announce his residency plans immediately following his triumph in November.
"My choice came down to our family's safety and the imperative to directing my full attention on enacting the agenda for affordability the city's residents voted for," the Mayor-Elect declared in his announcement.
Leaving Astoria
His home was in Astoria, Queens, an area famous for its abundance of immigrant populations and culinary diversity.
"To my neighbors in Astoria: many thanks for demonstrating what is great about New York City," he expressed.
"Although my address will change in the neighborhood, Astoria will forever remain within me and my work," he affirmed.
A Contentious Issue
Throughout his campaign, Mamdani linked his core platform – a rent freeze – to his personal living arrangements.
Yet his rivals, most notably ex-governor Andrew Cuomo, attacked Mamdani for occupying the affordable housing even though he came from a well-known family.
Previous Exceptions
Some mayors have opted to reside at Gracie Mansion.
Michael Bloomberg, the former mayor, kept his residence in his personal mansion on the Upper East Side throughout his three terms, which concluded in 2012.
Rather, Bloomberg said he believed it could serve as a venue for official events, and advocated for an extensive renovation of the older mansion.
A Grand New Home
Upon taking up residence at Gracie Mansion for his first day on 1 January, he will find himself in surroundings a stark contrast to his modest Astoria home.
Adorned in butter yellow paint, forest green window covers, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure overlooking the East River.
Inside, the ground floor of the Federal-style mansion is appointed consistent with the home's original era.
The compound, which allegedly has five bedrooms, also includes fortified protections to secure the mayor and his family.
Supernatural Speculation
Some residents have alleged that Gracie Mansion also has ghostly inhabitants.
Chirlane McCray, the partner of previous mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that doors would sometimes open and closing inexplicably, and the floorboards creaked eerily.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "It doesn't matter what anyone says," he declared in 2022. "The place is haunted in there, man."
A Critical Policy Issue
The apartment he is leaving is rent-stabilized, which means the city sets limits on how much property owners can increase rent each year.
City residents see such units as valuable lifelines as the housing expenses outpaces the means of many residents.
It was reported Mamdani was paying approximately $2,300 each month for his apartment.
According to real estate analysts Zillow, the typical monthly cost for a studio or one-bedroom in New York City is $3,500 a month.
