Tehran's Authorities Caution the former US President Not to Violate a Critical 'Red Line' Concerning Protest Involvement Statements

The former president has warned of involvement in Iran should its regime use lethal force against protesters, leading to admonishments from high-ranking figures in Tehran that any US intervention would overstep a definitive limit.

A Social Media Declaration Escalates Diplomatic Strain

Via a social media post on recently, Trump said that if Iran were to fire upon demonstrators, the America would “intervene on their behalf”. He added, “we are locked and loaded, and ready to go,” without clarifying what that would involve in reality.

Demonstrations Continue into the Next Phase Against a Backdrop of Economic Strain

Demonstrations across the nation are now in their second week, representing the biggest in several years. The present demonstrations were catalyzed by an sharp drop in the Iranian rial on Sunday, with its value plummeting to about a record depreciation, further exacerbating an already beleaguered economy.

Seven people have been confirmed dead, including a member of the Basij security force. Videos have shown security forces armed with firearms, with the noise of discharges heard in the recordings.

Iranian Officials Deliver Stark Warnings

Reacting to Trump’s threat, a top adviser, counselor for the supreme leader, warned that internal matters were a “non-negotiable limit, not material for online provocations”.

“Any foreign interference nearing Iran security on false pretenses will be met with a forceful retaliation,” the official said.

A separate high-ranking figure, the secretary of Iran’s supreme national security council, accused the US and Israel of having a hand in the unrest, a frequent accusation by officials when addressing protests.

“Washington needs to know that foreign interference in this national affair will lead to instability across the entire area and the destruction of Washington's stakes,” Larijani declared. “The public must know that the former president is the one that started this adventure, and they should be concerned for the well-being of their troops.”

Context of Strain and Protest Scale

Iran has vowed to strike foreign forces deployed in the Middle East in the past, and in June it launched strikes on Al-Udeid airbase in Qatar following the American attacks on its nuclear facilities.

The present unrest have occurred in the capital but have also extended to other urban centers, such as Isfahan. Business owners have closed their stores in protest, and activists have gathered on university grounds. While financial hardship are the central grievance, demonstrators have also chanted political demands and condemned what they said was corruption and mismanagement.

Government Stance Evolves

The Iranian president, the president, offered talks with representatives, taking a more conciliatory tone than authorities did during the previous unrest, which were met with force. Pezeshkian noted that he had instructed the administration to listen to the demonstrators' core grievances.

The fatalities of protesters, however, suggest that authorities are adopting a tougher stance as they address the protests as they continue. A announcement from the state security apparatus on Monday warned that it would take a harsh line against any outside meddling or “unrest” in the country.

As Iranian authorities deal with internal challenges, it has sought to counter allegations from the US that it is rebuilding its nuclear programme. Tehran has claimed that it is halted enrichment activities anywhere in the country and has indicated it is willing to engage in talks with the international community.
