The event occurred on Monday morning when an explosive device concealed beneath a vehicle exploded, causing the death of Lieutenant General Fanil Sarvarov.
Sarvarov was the head of the armed forces' department for training operations.
The committee indicated that one line of inquiry suggests the possible involvement of Ukrainian intelligence services. To date, Ukraine has not issued a comment.
Scene of the Attack
Personnel have been sent to the scene, which is said to be in a southerly district of the metropolis.
Media coverage state the detonation occurred in a vehicle lot near a residential building.
Pattern of Targeted Attacks
Since the start of the large-scale conflict in Ukraine, a series of Russian military commanders have been targeted within Moscow.
This latest event follows other notable incidents, such as:
- General Yaroslav Moskalik was lost his life in a vehicle explosion in Moscow earlier this year.
- General Igor Kirillov perished in late 2024 when a bomb hidden on a scooter was detonated remotely.
While a informant previously linked Kirillov's death to Ukraine's security service, such assertions are not publicly admitted as a matter of standard practice.
The war has increasingly seen shadowy operations moving into the heart of the Russian capital.
The examination into General Sarvarov's death remains active.
