A substantial Pacific bluefin tuna created waves at the Tokyo's Toyosu fish market this Monday, securing a record-breaking bid of 510.3 million yen (3.2 million US dollars; £2.4m) during the venue's first auction of the calendar year.

The top bid for the 243-kilogram fish was submitted by the parent firm of a popular sushi chain, which operates restaurants throughout Japan and internationally.

"An inaugural tuna signals fortune," remarked the entrepreneur, a familiar bidder at the traditional first sale.

Known as the Tuna Tycoon, this industry figure is famous for placing record bids for premium bluefin tuna at these auspicious year-opening auctions.

Auction Shock and Historic Past

Following the auction, the winner admitted to the press that he was "surprised at the amount," noting, "I expected we would be able to acquire it a little at a lower price, but the price escalated rapidly."

This new purchase tops his previous record purchases:

  • He bid 56.5 million yen away in 2012.
  • He paid 155 million yen a year later.
  • In 2019, he won a tuna for 333.6 million yen (2.1 million dollars).

Despite previously remarking that he thought he "bid too high," he has now gone on to surpass his personal record once again.

An Annual Spectacle of Exorbitant Bids

The opening auction at the Tokyo fish market is typically known for exceptionally high prices. The previous year, the initial tuna was bought for 207 million yen by a different sushi chain operator, which indicated the fish would be featured at its restaurants nationwide.

The high-energy atmosphere at the fish market during these early morning auctions has evolved into a major tourist attraction in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which began around 05:00 local time, was equally bustling.

Swift Service

The multi-million-dollar tuna was shortly thereafter sliced up for diners at the entrepreneur's sushi chains soon after the auction was finished.

"I sense like I've started the year in a auspicious way after consuming something so lucky as the year gets underway," shared one elated patron.
