A renowned South African media personality and entertainer has been shot dead in the nation's economic hub Johannesburg, triggering widespread grief across a country battling rampant crime.

Warrick Stock, who went by the name DJ Warras, was shot and killed in the central business district on the afternoon of Tuesday.

Police said the forty-year-old media personality was confronted by three individuals, with one began shooting at him before fleeing on foot.

Law enforcement said that Stock was ambushed as he was departing from a building close to the city center landmark.

The DJ sought to escape after he was wounded but succumbed to his injuries a short distance away.
