A uniquely yellow-fronted apartment block in the background helped us locate the footage.
We are analyzing images and video circulated this morning that depict the scene of a reported car bomb blast that Russian officials say fatally injured a high-ranking military officer in Moscow.
Officials in Russia stated that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was inside the vehicle that exploded and that he succumbed of his wounds. An investigation is currently ongoing.
The initial step to verify the location from which the images originated was based on posts saying the blast occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern part of the capital city of Russia.
Our analysis employed street-view imagery on digital map platforms and the Russian search engine Yandex to corroborate the distinctive yellow colour of a adjacent residential complex captured in the footage.
Identifying additional buildings, lamp-posts and the road configuration confirmed where the pictures were taken.
We also checked that the video clips were recent and that the images had not been manipulated.
