US air traffic controllers are more and more looking for additional employment and reporting ill, as they continue to work without pay during the federal closure, the transportation secretary has announced.

"The controllers are becoming strained," Sean Duffy informed a news outlet on Sunday, as some flights were grounded on the Californian coast due to personnel deficits.

After the federal closure on 1 October, air traffic controllers, who are deemed essential workers, were told to keep doing their jobs uncompensated.

But a number have been missing, leading terminals to halt or reduce their plane traffic, which has exacerbated setbacks due to climate and other issues.

More than three thousand US flights were delayed on the weekend, and Duffy said he anticipates the circumstances to grow worse.

"I observe the stress," he said in an discussion on a weekend program, adding that he had spoken to several controllers to listen to their worries firsthand.

"They're taking second jobs, they're out there looking, 'Can I drive Uber, can I secure an alternative of earnings to cover expenses?'" he continued.

Duffy further mentioned that on the previous day twenty-two notifications at airfields indicated travel would be delayed due to a shortage of employees - one of the highest after the shutdown started.

The American federal closure entered its 26th day on Sunday, making it the second-longest shutdown in history.

He has repeatedly warned that flight authorities would slow down the number of aircraft in the sky if there is a shortage of safety personnel.

In his interview, he would not answer straightforwardly when questioned if it was secure to fly in the US, and instead issued a personal plea to controllers.

"I require my staff focused on the flight paths, not on the monetary matters at home," the official stated.

On Sunday, certain flights were grounded at Los Angeles International Airport due to staffing shortages, leading to disruption at the fifth most active airport in the nation and among the most crowded in the globe, as well as additional travel extending north to the metropolis of Oakland.

The FAA notice went out at 8:45 AM in the morning on Sunday. Many flights were back on schedule by midday.

Travel at Newark Airport, though, were postponed an average of over an hour due to staffing shortages, and the authority said DFW, the second-busiest airfield in the US, could encounter problems from low staffing later in the day.

The FAA warned travelers in the state to consult carriers about revised departure times.

The situation precedes Game 3 of the championship, which is due to be played in Los Angeles on Monday night, and about one month prior to the Thanksgiving break, among the peak times to travel by air in the US.

Pressure on US air travel contributed to ending a government shutdown in two thousand nineteen. At the time, the halt had reached its fifth week and affected airline operations, including pilot training.

It prompted a number of air traffic controllers to remain absent on the same day on January 25, 2019, temporarily stopping movement at LaGuardia Airport in New York.

On that date, the former president, who at the time was in his initial presidency as president, agreed to sign a short-term spending bill, effectively ending the government shutdown after thirty-five days.
