England's Assistant Coach Reveals The Philosophy: The England Jersey Should Feel Like a Cape, Not Body Armour.

In the past, the England assistant coach was playing in League Two. Now, he is focused supporting the head coach secure World Cup glory in the upcoming tournament. His journey from athlete to trainer began as an unpaid coach for Accrington's Under-16s. He remembers, “It was in the evenings, third of a pitch, asked to do 11 v 11 … flat balls, not enough bibs,” and he fell in love with it. He discovered his purpose.

Rapid Rise

His advancement stands out. Starting with his first major job, he built a standing through unique exercises and strong interpersonal abilities. His roles at clubs led him to Chelsea and Bayern Munich, while also serving in roles with national teams across multiple countries. He has worked with legends including Thiago Silva, Kevin De Bruyne, Cristiano Ronaldo. Today, as part of Team England, it's all-consuming, the peak in his words.

“Dreams are the starting point … However, I hold that passion overcomes challenges. You have the dream then you break it down: ‘How can we achieve it, gradually?’ Our goal is the World Cup. Yet dreams alone aren't enough. It's essential to develop a methodical process so we can to have the best chance.”

Focus on Minutiae

Dedication, particularly on fine points, characterizes his journey. Working every hour day and night, they both challenge limits. Their methods involve player analysis, a plan for hot conditions for the World Cup in the US, Canada, and Mexico, and creating a unified squad. He stresses “Team England” and dislikes phrases including "pause".

“You’re not coming here for a holiday or a pause,” Barry notes. “It was vital to establish a setup that the players want to be part of and they're pushed that it’s a breather.”

Driven Leaders

He characterizes himself along with the manager as “very greedy”. “We aim to control every aspect of the game,” he states. “We strive to own the entire field and that’s what we spend many of our days on. Our responsibility not only to stay ahead with developments but to beat them and create our own ones. It's an ongoing effort focused on finding solutions. And to simplify complexity.

“We get 50 days together with the team prior to the World Cup. We must implement an intricate approach for a tactical edge and explain it thoroughly in our 50 days with them. It's about moving it from idea to information to knowledge to execution.

“To build a methodology for effective use in that window, we must utilize the entire 500 days we'll have after our appointment. In the time we don’t have the players, we have to build relationships among them. We have to spend time in calls with players, we have to see them in stadiums, understand them, connect with them. Relying only on those 50 days, we won't succeed.”

Upcoming Matches

Barry is preparing ahead of the concluding matches in the qualifying campaign – against Serbia at Wembley and away to Albania. England have guaranteed their place at the finals by winning all six games with perfect defensive records. However, they won't relax; quite the opposite. This period to reinforce the team’s identity, to maintain progress.

“The manager and I agree that our playing approach must reflect everything that is good from the top division,” he comments. “The athleticism, the flexibility, the physicality, the integrity. The England jersey needs to be highly competitive but comfortable to have on. It must resemble a cloak not protective gear.

“To ensure it's effortless, we have to give them a style that allows them to play freely as they do in club games, that resonates with them and encourages attacking play. They should overthink less and increase execution.

“There are emotional wins for managers in attack and defense – playing out from the back, pressing from the front. However, in midfield in that part of the ground, we feel the game has become stuck, particularly in the Premier League. Everybody has so much information now. They can organize – defensive shapes. We are really trying to increase tempo in that central area.”

Thirst for Improvement

Barry’s hunger for development is all-consuming. When he studied for his pro license, he felt anxious about the presentation, especially as his class included stars such as Frank Lampard and Michael Carrick. To enhance his abilities, he sought out the most challenging environments he could find to hone his presentations. Such as Walton jail in Liverpool, where he also took inmates in a football drill.

He completed the course in 2020 at the top of the class, and his dissertation – focusing on set-pieces, in which he examined numerous set-plays – was published. Lampard included won over and he recruited the coach as part of his backroom at Stamford Bridge. When Lampard was sacked, it was telling that the team dismissed most of his staff while keeping Barry.

The next manager at Chelsea was Tuchel, within months, they claimed the Champions League. When Tuchel was dismissed, Barry stayed on with Potter. Once Tuchel resurfaced at Munich, he recruited Barry of Chelsea to rejoin him. English football's governing body consider them a duo similar to Southgate and Holland.
