Edwards and O'Neil represent the initial names in the frame to replace Vitor Pereira as manager of Wolverhampton Wanderers.

Pereira was sacked on the weekend following the squad's 10-match without a victory start to the top-flight season.

And Edwards and O'Neil - each of whom have historic associations to the team - are among the options to be evaluated by the club leadership.

Edwards is currently at Middlesbrough, which would create a potential obstacle to his appointment at Molineux.

However the ex- Luton head coach - who made more than 100 of appearances for the club during his time as a player - is considered a strong contender for the position.

The 42-year-old is said to have backing from the club board as they begin the search of hiring a fresh manager.

O'Neil is also emerging as a surprise candidate, although he would be a surprising choice considering he was sacked by the club in the previous winter.

The ex- West Ham United midfielder is out of work which means the club would not need to provide any buyout fee.
