Alleged Stalker Asked: 'Yet What If I Could Be Madeleine?'
A woman indicted with harassing Kate McCann reportedly deposited her a recorded message which asked: "imagine I am Madeleine?"
The defendant, 24, who a jury heard has persistently asserted she was the missing Madeleine McCann, and Karen Spragg are on trial indicted with harassing Kate and Gerry McCann between June 2022 and February the current year.
On Monday, Leicester Crown Court heard phone records and evidence obtained from phones recorded Ms Wandelt persistently asking Madeleine's mother for a biological test during the past two years.
Madeleine's case in 2007 - as a three-year-old during a family holiday in Portugal - is among the most publicized child disappearance cases and is still unresolved.
'I Am Not Seeking Money'
A separate voicemail, presented in court, captured Ms Wandelt stating: "I realize I'm fat and unattractive like Madeleine used to be, but I believe what I believe."
While one recording of Ms Wandelt's monologues with Mrs McCann's recording expressed: "Suppose there is a tiny probability that I am Madeleine? What then? Wouldn't that be significant for you?"
"I am not seeking money, I maintain a existence here in Poland, I only wish to know," the recording stated.
The jury was advised that by means of emails, text messages and phone calls, Ms Wandelt asked for a genetic test, sent childhood photos to her phone in a bid to show a similarity to Mrs McCann's missing daughter, and claimed to have "recollections" from a childhood with the McCanns.
An intelligence analyst, an investigator with law enforcement who compiled the information, advised the court there "didn't appear to be any replies" from Mrs McCann.
Ms Wandelt furthermore contacted acquaintances of the McCanns, as per the communication logs.
On that date, Gerry McCann picked up a communication from Ms Wandelt to his wife's phone, stating she had "incorrect contact information."
On that occasion Ms Wandelt recorded a voicemail on Mrs McCann's recording declaring "I won't give up and I will prove my position."
The court heard Mrs Spragg struck up a connection through digital means with Ms Wandelt preceding assisting her on a trip to the McCanns' home in the county in last December.
Communication data demonstrated Mrs Spragg had contacted via messaging service to Mrs McCann to state the news outlets had portrayed Ms Wandelt as "emotionally disturbed" but that she deserved to be taken seriously in the months before the appearance to the village, that area, in December 2024.
The court learned correspondence between the two accused, in last November, considering endeavoring to acquire Mrs McCann's biological evidence from her trash or from utensils at a restaurant.
"We have to assert ourselves," the co-defendant informed Ms Wandelt.
On the night of the trip to their residence, the defendant dispatched a message which expressed: "We are positioned near the McCanns' home with our vehicle dark like private investigators. I had hoped to achieve this with someone else I never thought I would be engaged in this with the McCanns."
The case ongoing.
